Wastewater Treatment for Potato Processing

Wastewater Treatment for Potato-Processing Industry

The potato-processing industry requires large amounts of water. Freshly harvested potatoes first require cleaning. Farmland residue must be removed by washing, stones and other impurities are removed. This process leads to wastewaters that carry, next to their organic load, large amounts of silt, sand and fibrous materials. The peeling process creates wastewater that mainly contains leftover peels. If procedures include hot water processing like cooking or blanching, the wastewater will, moreover, contain significant amounts of swollen starch.

DAS offers customized treatment technology perfectly tailored to the requirements and processes of each client, which enables the recycling of pollutants for reuse. A mechanical process separates silt, sand and the peels in a way that will allow the select reuse of specific material as feed.

Downstream from the mechanical pretreatment, DAS offers anaerobic (for biogas production) and aeration wastewater treatment options as well as nitrification. DAS systems, moreover, provide process stability during seasonally changing pollution levels – while coping well with rest periods, the system has again reached its full capacity after a couple of days from restart.
